The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is confident of getting their  ICC T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India, as per reports. According to news circulating in Bangladeshi media, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has all but surrendered to the BCB’s demand of boycotting hosts and geopolitical rival India for the showpiece event next month.

Earlier in January, the BCB and the Bangladesh government refused to send the Bangladesh team to India for next month’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The board even urged the ICC to relocate all their matches to Sri Lanka citing security concerns in India.

Bangladesh’s security concern itself stemmed from the recent diplomatic tensions between the two nations, further exacerbated by the BCCI after urging the KKR franchise to expel fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad.

Bangladesh, BCB confident of successful T20 World Cup shift

As reported by the Daily Sun, BCB Vice-President Shakhawat Hossain has claimed that the board is confident and is expecting a favourable response from the ICC following their meeting on Tuesday, January 13. It is also understood that BCB’s stance of boycotting India is also heavily backed by an assessment report of ICC’s security team.

Earlier this week, Bangladesh’s Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul even claimed that the ICC assessment has ruled in favour of Bangladesh, in regards to the board’s security concerns in India. However, BCB’s aforementioned claim of receiving ICC backing was later debunked by a Cricbuzz report.

In an hour-long meeting between the BCB and ICC officials, an official privy to the details stated that the Bangladesh board stood its ground regarding potential threat to its players in India.

T20 World Cup problem to be resolved by Thursday, claims Bangladesh media

The Daily Sun report also claimed that the prevailing standoff between the BCB and the ICC regarding Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 boycott of India will likely be resolved by Thursday, January 15.

The report further added that there is a strong possibility that the ICC will give into the BCB’s demands and allow the Bangladesh team to have their T20 World Cup 2026 matches relocated from India to Sri Lanka.

The source stated that since Bangladesh is a full member ICC nation, the BCB has the right to appeal if they feel their legitimate demands are not met. Furthermore, BCB’s request carries legal weight and it will not be easy for the ICC to brush off Bangladesh by excluding the full-member nation from the tournament overall.

As per the original T20 World Cup 2026 schedule as devised by the ICC late last year, the Bangladesh cricket team is placed in Group C of the tournament alongside England, Italy, Nepal and West Indies. Their four Group C fixtures were planned to be hosted by the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and by the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

In case of a likely pull out from India, the Bangladesh team will have their T20 World Cup matches relocated to either Colombo or Kandy or at both Sri Lankan venues.
