In a significant setback for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), star left-hand opening batter Devon Conway will miss at least the first half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

This comes after the announcement that Conway requires surgery on his left thumb, which will sideline him for at least eight weeks. The injury was sustained during a T20I series against Australia, subsequently ruling him out of the following Test match as well.

The 32-year-old New Zealander's absence is a considerable loss for CSK as they gear up to defend their title in the upcoming season, starting on March 22. 

Last season, Conway was a key player for CSK, scoring 672 runs in 16 matches at an average of 51.69, with six fifties to his name.

His remarkable partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad at the top of the order was a cornerstone of CSK's strategy, highlighted by his pivotal 47 off 25 balls in the rain-affected final against the Gujarat Titans, contributing to CSK's fifth IPL title.

On a personal note, Conway and his wife, Kim Watson, experienced a profound loss in February when they lost their unborn child. This personal tragedy adds an emotional layer to Conway's professional challenges as he faces recovery from his thumb surgery.

In Conway's absence, Henry Nicholls, who was initially called up as cover for Conway for the first Test against Australia, will continue with the New Zealand squad for the second game.
