BCCI set to introduce some changes with regard to pay (Source: @BCCI/@CricCrazyJohns/X.Com)
After India's gut-wrenching defeat against Australia and an overall forgetful second-half in Tests, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning for a variable pay structure of cricketers. According to Indian Express, this performance-based system will hold players accountable for underperforming, with pay cuts for poor results.
These disappointing series outcomes, which also eliminated India from the World Test Championship final race have led to this bold decision.
Big Indian Stars To Face Pay-Cut?
The BCCI plans to implement a performance-based pay system for India's cricketers, and that could include a significant pay cut based on how the players perform. Although details are being finalised, this step is said to increase player accountability, thereby increasing the level of performance on a consistent basis.
The cutbacks may also be tied up with match fees; if players fail to live up to performance expectations, the match fee might get cut back. Furthermore, a stricter demotion system could be incorporated in the central contracts, so the BCCI would be able to downgrade players when they are not doing their best.
How Does BCCI's Proposed Pay Cut Work?
This proposal follows the BCCI's 2024 introduction of an incentive system for Test cricket. An incentive amounting to Rs 30 lakh per match is given to those players who feature in at least 50% of Test matches since the 2022-23 season. The incentives are increased to Rs 45 lakh if a player plays 75% of the matches.
This strategy, rewarding a player for commitment to Test cricket, would help keep participation levels high. The new salary cut system is expected to affect the motivation and performance of the players and the upcoming series against England and the 2025 Champions Trophy will be a test for the system.
