On August 30, 2016, the England team created history and smashed a world-record 444 runs against Pakistan in an ODI game at the iconic Trent Bridge Stadium, Headingley.

The day witnessed batting of the highest class, when Alex Hales, the England opener smacked a 122-ball 171 runs, and took the Pakistan attack to the cleaners as the bowlers looked helpless on a batting paradise.

Hales, middle-order propel England to world-record total

Hales, the explosive batter recorded the then highest score for England in ODIs, surpassing Robin Smith's 167. Hales, hammered 22 boundaries in a near chance-less innings as England tore apart the Pakistan bowling attack with utmost ease.

Apart from Hales, the middle-order batters, too, contributed with quick-fire runs. Joe Root, batting at number 3 played a gritty knock of 85 off 86 deliveries, but it was the finishing abilities of Jos Buttler (90 off 51), and Eoin Morgan (57 off 27), which propelled the hosts to a record-breaking total.

Wahab Riaz, the Pakistan speedster recorded figures of 10 overs, 110 runs, without taking a wicket, as the Three Lions targeted him to achieve their biggest total in ODI cricket.

Mohammad Amir's Valiant Effort Goes In Vain

Chasing a daunting 445 for the win, Pakistan were never really in the contest. Despite a quick-fire 58 off 30 deliveries, which gave Pakistan a ray of hope, the other batters failed to deliver under pressure.

The middle-order batters didn't contribute much, despite almost everyone getting a decent start. Pakistan's best batter on that day was Mohammad Amir, who showed everyone how to bat on a placid surface.

Coming in at number 10, Amir slammed 58 off 28 deliveries, and for a brief period gave a fight to the English bowlers. However, 445 was a bit too much to chase as the visitors were bundled out for 275.
