Michael Vaughan, the former England captain has taken a subtle dig at Virat Kohli by comparing his Test stats with that of Joe Root.

Root eclipssed Kohli in the last 3 years

Before Covid-19 arrived, Virat Kohli was the leading Test centurion amongst the Fab 4, which also includes Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson. However, since 2021, his form has massively dropped in Test cricket, and he has only managed to score 2 centuries in the last 4 years.

Root on the other hand, had just 17 Test centuries in 2021, well behind his companions. Talks were going around that the former England cricketer is not good enough to succeed at the Test level. He had the issue of failing to convert 50s into big hundreds, but since 2021, Root has been on a phenomenal run.

In the last 3 years, Root has slammed a staggering 16 Test tons, and has performed exceedingly well across continents. On the other hand, Kohli lost his midas touch in the game's longest format and has only racked up two centuries, both of which came in 2023.

After Root scored his 33rd Test century yesterday, Vaughan came up with a jibe at Kohli, and compared him with Root. He compared the Test records between the two cricketers, and came up with a caption - "Morning India."

After a dry patch, Kohli back to his best in Tests

After a couple of dry seasons, Kohli looked at his imperial best in 2023. He had a really good Test series against Australia to kick-srart 2023, and followed it up with a brilliant Test tour of the Windies, where he scored his 29th Test ton.

The former captain wrapped up 2023 with a breath-taking 76 against the Proteas, in a match which India lost.

Talking about Root, he, too, had a dip in form, but the former Test captain has regrouped in 2024, and recently slammed a sensational 143 against Sri Lanka to give England the edge in the second Test.
