Harmanpreet Kaur Surpasses Mandhana, Only Behind Rohit Sharma For An Unwanted T20I Record

Harmanpreet Kaur led a spirited Indian women side to an emphatic win over their Bangladeshi counterparts in the second T20I. The ‘Women in Blue’ successfully defended a mere 95 against the hosts in Mirpur, and went 2-0 up in their three-match T20I series.

While the win marked yet another triumphant moment for Team India under Kaur’s illustrious leadership tenure, the charismatic leader also attained a rare unwanted record in doing so.

Kaur only behind Rohit Sharma for this record

After successfully chasing down Bangladesh’ total in the series opener, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur opted to bat first in the second. Openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma both failed to get going as the visitors lost three crucial wickets within the powerplay.

Captain Kaur’s dismissal was the third of the early jolts India suffered, as she was cleaned up by hosts spinner Sultana Khatun for a first-ball duck.

Notably, her score-less effort marked the sixth duck of her seasoned T20I career. She went past the likes of Mandhana and Verma, who jointly held India Women’s previous unwanted record with five ducks each to their name.

Moreover, the 34-year-old also inched closer to India men’s captain Rohit Sharma for an all-time Indian record. Sharma, who has turned up for the ‘Men in Blue’ 148 times in T20I cricket, registered 10 ducks in his career, i.e., double of second-worst KL Rahul with five ducks.

Interestingly, the two active skippers of India’s T20I pantheon are currently holding the unwanted record of most ducks to their name. However, the aforementioned stat hardly diminishes their value, considering the legion of experience they bring to the table.

Kaur is also the leading run-getter for India women, and fourth highest in the world across women’s T20I cricket. Meanwhile, Sharma is the second highest run-aggregator in the men’s format, only behind his own teammate Virat Kohli.

Kaur will now turn up for the Indian women in the series-concluding third T20I against Bangladesh. The match will be played out at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on July 13.
