In a severe blow to Pakistan's Champions Trophy prospects, Haris Rauf suffered a muscular sprain in his lower chest wall during Pakistan’s tri-series match against New Zealand on February 8. It casted a doubt on his participation in the rest of the series and his Champions Trophy participation.

Haris Rauf was seen leaving the field mid-over and underwent scans, which confirmed the injury was not severe. However, as a precaution, he will miss Pakistan’s February 12 game against South Africa but is expected to recover fully for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, starting February 19. His place in the squad, as of now remains secure, however, Akif Javed is set to replace him for the February 12 match of Tri-series against South Africa.

Akif Javed Set To Replace Rauf

Left-arm fast bowler Akif Javed is the frontrunner to replace Rauf in the tri-nation series. According to ARYNews, The PCB selection committee deliberated over multiple candidates, including Mohammad Wasim Jr. and Mohammad Ali, but sources indicate Akif Javed is likely to be named officially soon.

Akif Javed has showcased his bowling prowess across formats, with notable performances in First-Class and List A cricket. In 23 First-Class matches, he has picked up 52 wickets at an average of 43.53 and an economy rate of 4.29, with a best innings haul of 4/67. His List A career spans 30 matches, where he has taken 33 wickets maintaining a bowling average of 36.00 and an economy rate of 6.07, with his best figures being 5/60.

What Is Rauf's Champions Trophy Prospect?

Notably, Rauf’s injury occurred during the 37th over of New Zealand’s innings, prompting him to exit the field. All-rounder Salman Agha completed his over. Rauf’s rehabilitation will continue under the PCB medical team’s supervision, and he will stay with the squad despite missing the South Africa fixture.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will face the South Africa on February 12 in a knockout game where the winner will be facing New Zealand in the final match on February 14.
