Hardik Pandya will lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024 [X.com]
Ever since Mumbai Indians (MI) traded Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans ahead of Indian Premier League 2024 Auctions, fans have expressed their discontent.
However, when MI named Pandya as the franchise skipper for the upcoming IPL 2024 edition having replaced the five-time championship-winning captain Rohit Sharma, the backlash seen is unprecedented.
While several former players and current MI members have openly expressed their disapproval, former England captain Eoin Morgan has lauded the Mumbai-based club.
Speaking to the Times of India, the 2019 World Cup-winning skipper called the franchise courageous and explained how the move is forward-thinking, and a long-term one.
Here's what Morgan said
"If you look at the franchise itself, they have had a very forward-thinking, logic-driven and future-proof driven style of strategy for a long time. A decision like this reinforces that the franchise always comes first. You probably see this as being a tough decision that they’ve made hoping that the long-term benefits will see MI lifting another championships in the coming years.
So, in a way, you’ve to admire the courage that it takes to make a decision like that because not every team would take that decision.
Pandya during his first stint with MI, won four IPL trophies and then lifted his first as skipper leading Titans in IPL 2022, while Sharma won all his IPL titles as captain between 2013 and 2020.
