England’s Ashes troubles worsened on Day 2 of the Melbourne Test when Gus Atkinson picked up an injury mid-match. After that, he never returned to the field again in the match. Later on, the scan revealed that the pacer has sustained a serious left hamstring injury and has been ruled out of the upcoming match.
In a statement, England confirmed the news. In the statement, they said, “England Men’s seamer Gus Atkinson has been ruled out for the remainder of the Ashes tour after scans confirmed he has sustained a left hamstring injury. The Surrey right-armer left the field after bowling his fifth over of Australia’s second innings during England’s victory at the MCG in the fourth Test.”
In the ongoing series, England is already having a nightmare. The misery has only deepened as their pace attack continues to crumble under injury blows. Mark Wood and Jofra Archer were already ruled out earlier, and Atkinson’s injury is a recent setback for the visitors.
England will not name a replacement for the pacer
Despite this massive blow, England has taken a bold call. They opted not to name a replacement for Atkinson for the upcoming Sydney Test. In the statement, they said, “England will not call up a replacement for the fifth Test, which gets under way in Sydney on 4 January.”
The series has already slipped away from England’s hand as the series is already hang on 3-1 on Australia’s favor. Both sides gear up for the Sydney showdown on January 4, where England will fight to salvage pride. Meanwhile, Australia aims to seal a commanding 4-1 series victory on home soil in front of roaring fans.
