As the fans across the globe are enjoying some of the gripping red-ball contests, the pitches are grabbing more attention than the match itself. The longest format is under threat as India vs South Africa's first Test wrapped up shockingly early on day three.

The pitch debate was already blowing minds, and the conclusion of the first Test of the ongoing Ashes within two days added fuel. Just when the debate over the pitch was heating up, ICC's latest rating on the Perth track sparked attention.

ICC rates Perth pitch as 'very good'

In the age of T20, Test cricket is fighting to stay alive, with its five-day drama becoming a rare spectacle. As the world is having some of the thrilling red-ball contests, the first Test between India and South Africa finished within three days, and the Kolkata surface faced criticism. But the world witnessed another astonishing finish within a week.

As the world was eagerly waiting for the Ashes, the first match of the series ended within just two days. The world remained in disbelief as the fast bowlers dominated the game. After 19 wickets were down on the opening day, the game ended within 847 deliveries. Fans and experts alike questioned the future of Test cricket, while taking sharp aim at the Perth pitch.

The match kept the world talking, but ICC's recent rating of the Perth pitch stunned them. Even after a two-day finish of the Test match, the highest cricket body rated it as 'very good'. For those unfamiliar, the ICC tags a pitch as 'very good' when it offers consistent bounce, proper seam movement, and a fair balance between batters and bowlers throughout the match.

Despite a thrilling showdown between India and the West Indies, the ICC still rated the Delhi and Ahmedabad pitches as 'satisfactory'. The Ahmedabad Test lasted three days, and the Delhi Test lasted almost five days. Again, ICC's double standards between SENA countries and sub-continents grabbed the attention.

Cricket Australia appreciates ICC’s decision

Despite the world remaining stunned by ICC’s verdict over the Perth surface, Cricket Australia's Chief of Cricket, James Allsopp, expressed happiness over that. Reflecting on that, he said fans might have been heartbroken for the early finish, but the world saw a gripping contest between the rivals.

“The match referee's 'very good' rating justifies our belief Perth Stadium produced a pitch that provided a fair balance between bat and ball. The dominance of some brilliant pace bowling from both sides and the frenetic nature of the contest meant the match lasted only two days. This was disappointing for fans holding tickets for days three and four, but we saw some incredible moments which captivated huge viewing audiences,” he said.

While Eden Gardens faced backlash over India vs South Africa's early Test finish, the ICC has yet to rate the pitch. But the rating for the Perth pitch is sparking storms.
