Australian women’s cricket captain Alyssa Healy is back on the field after more than six months, taking a big step in her recovery from a knee injury. Her return comes just in time as she works towards being fit for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, starting in late September in India.
Healy played her first competitive match since February for Australia A in a T20 against India A in Queensland. She smashed 27 runs from just 18 balls, including five boundaries, helping her side to a 13-run win.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. After Healy’s dismissal, the middle-order struggled on a slow pitch. Only Anika Learoyd stood out, scoring an unbeaten 50 from 44 balls to guide Australia A to 137/6.
India A Fail To Seal The Win Against Australia A
India A also found batting tricky. Star opener Shafali Verma made just 3 runs, but Raghvi Bist hit 33 off 20 balls to keep them in the hunt. Needing 17 in the final over, India A were stopped by Australia’s Kim Garth, who gave away only three runs. Bowlers Amy Edgar, Tess Flintoff, and Sianna Ginger each took two wickets to seal the win.
For now, Healy will play as a batter in the remaining T20s before taking up wicketkeeping duties in the ODIs later this month in Brisbane. If all goes well, she’ll be a key player as Australia chases an eighth World Cup title.
Speaking with the reporters after the match, she said,"I've done a lot of hitting in the nets, and haven't really had any time out in the middle for a long period of time, so it was nice to just get back out there, and hopefully the decision making will start kicking back in at some point."
Notably, Australia will open their World Cup campaign against New Zealand on October 1 in Indore.
