Ayub Likely To Be Included In Provisional Champions Trophy Squad
Despite Saim Ayub's injury, the selectors have expressed confidence in his potential, after considering his exceptional form in the 50-overs format over recent months. According to source close to the selection panel confirmed that the decision to include Ayub in the preliminary squad was influenced by his consistent performances as an opener.
The PCB has sent Ayub to London for further medical evaluations to determine if he can regain full fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy.
“The selectors will keep him in the preliminary squad as the Pakistan Cricket Board has sent Saim to London to get the best medical opinion on his ankle injury in order to know if he can be fit in time for the Champions Trophy,” he said.
However, it is important to mention that, if Ayub fails to recover in time, the selectors are prepared with alternative options. The replacement for him includes the names of Abdullah Shafique or Imam-ul-Haq.
Furthermore, the selectors are also planning to recall Fakhar Zaman to the 15-member provisional squad, with Ayub and Zaman potentially forming the opening partnership.
The final squad is due to be submitted to the ICC by February 12, and the selectors will have to make a definitive call on Ayub's fitness before that deadline. While the selectors do not need technical committee clearance for the submission, the focus will be on ensuring the team is in the best shape possible for the tournament.
