Test bound Afridi congratulates Asad Shafiq

A day after Asad Shafiq's final appearance in competitive cricket, his ex-Pakistan teammate and active fast bowler Shaheen Afridi took to X (formerly Twitter) and congratulated the 37-year-old outbound star.

The speedster also lauded Shafiq for his title triumph for Karachi Whites at the 2023 National T20 Cup and wished him the very best for his post-retirement assignments.

He tweeted:

“Good end of a remarkable career #AsadShafiq bhai. Hope you continue shining in your post retirement assignments 👏. Congratulations on winning the #NationalT20Cup, #KarachiWhites. 🏆”

Asad Shafiq made his international debut in 2010 and went on to represent his country in 77 Tests, 60 ODIs and an additional 10 T20I matches. The elegant middle-order batter tallied 4,660 runs in his Test profile at an average of nearly 39. Overall, the cricketer minted over 12,000 runs across all first-class levels.

At the age of 37, inching towards 38, Shafiq announced his retirement, citing a dip in passion for the sport. Confirming his exit through a press conference, he said:

“I am not feeling the same excitement and passion playing cricket and neither do I have the same fitness levels required for international cricket. Which is why I have decided to say goodbye to all cricket.”

On the other hand, Shaheen Afridi is bracing himself and the rest of his Pakistani teammates for a gruelling Test challenge Down Under against Australia. The first of the three Test matches is set to commence from December 14 onwards at the Perth Stadium.
