Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan believes that Virat Kohli should take over as India’s Test captain for the upcoming series in England. He suggests that Shubman Gill should be Kohli's deputy. This idea came up just a few days after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket.
Who Could Be The Next Captain?
Since Rohit's retirement, there’s been a lot of speculation about who will lead the Indian team next. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah as potential captains. Meanwhile, some reports say that Kohli himself has shown interest in stepping down from Test cricket altogether.
On social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), Vaughan shared his opinion, saying,
"If I was India I would give the captaincy to Virat for the Test series in England .. Shubman Gill can be his VC for the tour .. #India 👍"
The Indian selectors are planning to meet soon to finalize the squad for the England tour. An official announcement is expected by the third week of May, while the India A team list will be revealed earlier.
According to sources within the BCCI, Kohli, now 36, has hinted at leaving Test cricket. This news surprised many in the cricket world, but the selection committee is still considering giving him the captaincy for the England series. This would allow Gill more time to develop his leadership skills.
Virat Kohli’s Leadership Record
Virat Kohli is no stranger to leading the Indian team. He was the Test captain before Rohit took over in 2022. During Kohli’s tenure, India won 40 out of 68 Tests, boasting a win rate of nearly 59%. As a batsman, Kohli remains one of India’s best in the Test format, with 9,230 runs in 123 matches, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.
Kohli’s last Test series was the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where he struggled to score and faced criticism for his poor shot selection. However, his recent performance in the IPL has been impressive, suggesting that he is in good form ahead of the upcoming World Test Championship cycle.
