Former Ireland pacer Tim Murtagh has announced his decision to retire after the conclusion of the ongoing County 2023 season. Murtagh, 42, has played County cricket for 23 years and will turn up for Middlesex against Warwickshire at Lord's today.

The pacer, who bid adieu to international cricket in 2019, will retire from professional cricket and will move into full-time coaching. Ahead of the 2023 County season, Murtagh had already signed a player-cum-coach contract with Middlesex County Cricket Club (MCCC).

In a statement, the 42-year-old thanked MCCC for this new opportunity, while recalling his time as a player.

Here's what Murtagh said

"I've had these words mulling around in my head for around ten years, but now is the time to put them onto paper. It's with a great deal of pride and a tinge of sadness that I announce my retirement from cricket at the end of this season. Its finally time to hang up the speed menace boots (the irony is not lost on me) after an incredible 25 years of joy playing professional sport.

Reflecting on his tenure with the club, he expressed his gratitude, especially to the team he has been a part of since 2007.

"It's been an incredible honour to have played for this great club since 2007 and I am grateful to everyone who made me feel instantaneously at home here. Right up to the present management in helping me transition out of playing this year. I still hope to play a big part in keeping us in Division One these last two weeks. Moving forward I can't wait to help the next generation of Middlesex cricketers live out their own dreams as I move onto the coaching staff and the next phase of my life."

For Middlesex, Murtagh has played 237 matches and picked up 875 wickets, and scored 3,884 runs since 2007. Overall, the Irish bowler has claimed 1,341 wickets, which include 951 First-Class scalps.

For Ireland, Murtagh appeared in three Tests, 58 ODIs, and 14 T20Is picking 100 wickets. The pacer's final professional match will be against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on September 26.
