'Youngster Who We Can Look Up To'-Kapil Dev Lauds Shubman Gill After Terrific Asia Cup 2023
Shubman Gill celebrates his century against Bangladesh [X.com]
After a rough patch after the Indian Premier League (IPL), opener Shubman Gill returned to form in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023.
Gill, 23, shut his critics down, amassing 302 runs in six matches in the six-nation tournament, which includes two fifties and one cracking century, once again displaying his class.
The young batter slammed his fifth ODI and sixth international century in 2023 while turning up for India against Bangladesh last week. Gill's consistency helped India's batting throughout the tournament, which Rohit Sharma and Co. won emphatically beating Sri Lanka in the final.
Speaking to PTI, former India and World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev owing to Gill's terrific outing in Asia Cup 2023, stated that the Gujarat Titans (GT) player is someone fans can look up to.
Here's what Dev said
"This is a youngster who we can look up to. He is the future of Indian cricket. Very very proud to have a player of that ability in India."
In 17 international matches this year, Gill has amassed 1,025 runs at an impressive average of 68.33, and six centuries. The former KKR player finished the Asia Cup 2023 competition as a leading run-getter leaving behind players like Babar Azam, and Kusal Mendis.
Gill will be seen in action when India takes on five-times World Cup winners Australia in the upcoming three-ODI series, starting September 22 at Mohali.
