In a surprise inclusion, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) included ace off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the Indian squad for the upcoming One-Day Internationals (ODI) against Australia, keeping the player's chances of featuring in Cricket World Cup 2023 alive.

Ashwin has lately been training at National Cricket Academy (NCA) with a white-ball and is set to play in a local 50-over match today (Sept 19) despite being named in India's squad. As per Cricbuzz, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) player will turn up for Take Solution MRPA at the SSN College Ground against Young Stars in the ongoing TNCA-organised VAP Trophy.

TNCA official confirmed the same in a statement, explaining Ashwin's reason behind playing. The 37-year-old has already appeared in three games last week for MRPA.

Here's what TNCA official said

"He wants to spend some time on the ground, and a 50-over game will provide him with that opportunity. He recently visited the NCA for routine maintenance work on his body and to hone his skills under the guidance of spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule. He's determined to prepare himself comprehensively for any and all challenges."

India's leading Test wicket-taker has played just two ODIs in the last six years and most recently faced off against South Africa in 2022. The former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowler has 151 wickets in 111 ODIs and has been part of India's World Cup 2011 and Champions Trophy 2013 winning campaigns.

The bowling all-rounder will join the Indian squad in Chandigarh on September 20, with the first ODI scheduled for 22 at Mohali.
