Amid India’s tough series against England, rumours have begun to spread that Gautam Gambhir will likely be sacked from his role as head coach in the Test format. VVS Laxman, another legendary cricketer, is believed to be the replacement choice, but is the news factually correct? Let’s find out.

Gambhir finds himself in a precarious position as India’s Test coach. Under his tenure, the team lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in 2024-25, and are currently trailing 1-2 in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.

Gautam Gambhir’s Job As Head Coach Is Safe For Now

Undoubtedly, head coach Gautam Gambhir is under intense scrutiny amid India’s poor performance in the Test format. Amid a series of defeats, the team also failed to qualify for the WTC 2025 final.

Recently, a tweet from the handle @Teamindiacrick sent Indian cricket fans into a frenzy, claiming that VVS Laxman is set to replace Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian Test team.

The sensational post, loaded with siren emojis and all caps, sparked instant speculation on social media. But how true is this claim?

Firstly, it's also worth mentioning here that Gambhir is contracted until 2027 as head coach. As for now, no official update from BCCI or any other reliable source has suggested that Gautam’s job is in danger.

He is likely to continue as India’s red-ball coach in the near future. Despite repeated failures, Gambhir is leading a young team into transition, which also works in his favour. Hence, the above mentioned post is fake.

Laxman, who has been heading the National Cricket Academy (NCA), has often stepped in as interim coach during limited-overs tours or when the main coaching staff was unavailable. While he's a respected figure and a known tactician, there is no official indication from the BCCI or any major cricketing outlet that he will take over as the red-ball coach.

Overall, until the BCCI confirms, Gautam Gambhir will remain India’s head coach for the near future.
