Paul Valthaty on Monday (October 23) suffered a major tragedy, losing his sister and little nephew in a fatal fire accident at their residence in Mumbai. The former Punjab Kings (PBKS) opening batter endured the worst out of a brutal fire mishap as he lost members of his family in the fire.

As per a report in the Hindustan Times, the fire wasn't initially life-threatening but took a devastating turn and ended the lives of two family members in the Valthaty household. The unfortunate individuals were Paul's 43-year-old sister Glory Valthaty and her son Joshua, who was aged six.

The two couldn't survive the burns and bruises caused by the fire accident that broke out in the housing society in Borivali West. The fire picked up deadly proportions after catching fuel from the first-floor Kitchen of Flat 121 and spraying until the fourth flooring of the Veena Santoor CHS.

The report further mentioned of house helps in the Valthaty household who sustained major burns and are currently in the MICU ward at the Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali.

One of the house helpers named Rajeshwari Bhartare, aged 24, has unfortunately suffered 100 per cent burns on his body. The fireman who came to rescue the family has also sustained injuries.

"In that one hour, the blaze took an ugly turn," PR Parulekar, a senior fire officer told Hindustan Times. "If we had been informed earlier, it could have been controlled. The first-floor kitchen was in flames."

Valthaty, famous for his memorable hundred for the Punjab franchise in the 2011 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), retired from professional cricket earlier in the year.

The former batter is considered the protagonist of one of Indian cricket's unfulfilled tales, having featured in just five first-class and four List A games for Himachal Pradesh and making his final appearance in the IPL back in 2013 before calling it quits aged 39.
