Quinton de Kock cracked a brilliant century against Bangladesh to lead South Africa’s recovery in their latest World Cup 2023 faceoff in Mumbai. The dashing opener punched out an imperial 174 and formed blistering 100-plus stands with interim skipper Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen to take South Africa past the 300-run mark.

In his quest of quick death-overs runs, the wicketkeeper-batsman found a man at deep backward point to make his way back to the pavilion against a standing applause from the Wankhede crowd.

Quinton de Kock raced to his century from his 101st delivery during the 35th over of the innings. Thereafter, the cricketer switched gears, stepped on a pedal and demonstrated unreal acceleration to mint 74 runs from his subsequent 39 deliveries.

Against the run-of-play, the 30-year-old found Bangladesh fielder Nasum Ahmed stationed at deep backward point to have his innings curtailed at a near career-best 174.

Quinton de Kock stamped 15 boundaries and seven sixes in his innings to register his career-best World Cup score.

The innings marked his 20th ODI ton and he became the youngest South African in 50-overs international history to reach the landmark. The cricketer, who did not have a single World Cup ton to his name up until a month ago, now has three in his profile considering he had amassed match-winning centuries against Sri Lanka and Australia earlier in the tournament.

Quinton de Kock’s 174-run epic also became the highest individual World Cup score by any wicketkeeper-batsman, taking him past former Australian stumper Adam Gilchrist for his 149 at the 2007 final.

Notably, the South African batting veteran is currently playing the final set of his ODI fixtures as he set to retire from the format after the ongoing 2023 World Cup.
