Former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Eoin Morgan backed the franchise's comeback men - captain Shreyas Iyer and team mentor Gautam Gambhir - to revive its fortunes at the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Speaking to 'Jio Cinema' as an expert, Morgan underlined the importance of strong leadership within the side and said ex captain Gambhir and Indian middle-order stalwart Iyer are the right men at the helm of affairs as KKR strive for resurgence after two disappointing years.

It was under Morgan's captaincy back in IPL 2021 that the popular franchise made it to the playoffs of the tournament, reaching the final and losing to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Since 2018, it remains KKR's only post-league stage appearance in IPL cricket and the two-time champions haven't won the coveted silverware after the 2014 edition under Gambhir.

While the return of Gambhir as KKR's impactful team mentor with a voice of influence on cricketing matters is expected to rejuvenate the franchise, Iyer's comeback after an injury-forced absence last summer is equally critical for the former champions to get back on their feet.

"Gambhir along with Shreyas will be mentoring KKR in every facet, and given the record that he's had in the Knight Rider shirt, I think it will make a positive impact," Morgan said.

Gambhir was pivotal to KKR's cause as captain and top-order stalwart in his heyday, transforming the franchise from the also-rans of IPL to one of the most successful teams with two titles to boast of in 2012 and 2014.

He reunites with his former Delhi Capitals (DC) teammate Shreyas Iyer after the 2018 edition of the IPL as the Indian batter returns to don the captaincy hat having missed the IPL 2023 due to a back injury.
