Eoin Morgan Says Coach Mott, English Seniors Running Away & Not Facing Media

The England team, under Jos Buttler, succumbed to the worst title-defense in World Cup history, by becoming the first side to crash out of the 2023 semi-finals race. After claiming a solitary win over Bangladesh earlier in the tournament, the defending champions ended up losing each of their five subsequent fixtures, which included over 100-run drubbings at the hands of South Africa and hosts India.

Moreover, Buttler and co. were also upstaged by an injury-ravaged Sri Lankan unit, and a spirited Afghanistan line-up as they are currently placed at the bottom of the 2023 World Cup points table. With title-defense no longer a concern, England still needs to secure a top eight finish in the tournament in order to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

On the backdrop of team’s tumultuous World Cup 2023 campaign, former skipper and 2019 World Cup winner Eoin Morgan has accused the current England team management of shirking responsibility by not facing media personnel.

Eoin Morgan blasts England team management

After England slumped to a tournament-crashing 33-run defeat against Australia, the team management sent out assistant coach Carl Hopkinson for the post-match press conference.

The decision to send out an assistant coach was slammed by England’s 2019 World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, who claimed that the current team management is attempt to shirk the responsibility of facing the press themselves. According to Morgan, either head coach Matthew Mott or one of the senior members of the team should have stepped up to face the media instead.

While speaking on Sky Sports, the cricketer-turned-commentator said:

"I was surprised and shocked by it. When you sit in a meeting as a captain or a head coach you make those decisions on the side and when things are going wrong, you need absolute clarity and direction. When you talk about messaging in an interview process, you naturally turn to senior players or your head coach to front up."

"In certain instances, you could look at it and say, 'Are they shirking responsibility?' At the moment, it is a sinking ship and you need people to take responsibility for their actions."

England, having sustained six defeats from their first seven World Cup 2023 fixtures, need to win both their remaining matches to lift themselves up from the bottom of the points table. Apart from avoiding the wooden-spooners tag, the defending champions also need to secure a top-eight finish by the end of the league stage to book a berth for the next Champions Trophy, set to be played in Pakistan in 2025.
