In a significant development, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalised England Women for maintaining a slow over rate in the first T20I against India. On Saturday, England Women had an ordinary outing, as they were crushed by their Indian counterparts in the first match of the ongoing five-game series at Trent Bridge.

ICC Penalises ENG-W For Slow Over Rate Offence

After a crushing defeat in the first T20I against India, England Women were found guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to minimum over-rate offences.

Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct allows match officials to fine five per cent of the match fees to members of the fielding side for each over that they fail to deliver within the stipulated time.

The hosts fell short of their target by two overs in the allotted time, and as a result, the match referee imposed a fine of ten per cent of their match fees on the England players after the game concluded.

English skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt accepted the sanctions, so the match officials didn't conduct a formal hearing.

England Women Suffer Horrendous Defeat In 1st T20I

Led by Sciver-Brunt, England Women had a disastrous start to the India series, with the visitors steamrolling them by 97 runs in the inaugural affair in Nottingham. Batting first, India Women posted a massive total of 210 runs, riding on Smriti Mandhana's historic maiden T20I ton.

In response, skipper Sciver-Brunt fought her way, scoring a counterattacking 42-ball 66. However, Nallapureddy Charani's sensational four-wicket haul overpowered the English captain's batting exploits, with India kickstarting the tour with an emphatic victory. The second match of the series will be played at Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol on July 1.
