In a significant development for English cricket, 17-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Thomas Rew has signed his first professional contract with Somerset County Cricket Club. The current England U19 captain had previously represented the club on a short-term deal and has now  signed a two-year rookie contract.

Somerset Academy Star Thomas Rew Leads England’s Future

A student of King’s College, Rew rose through the ranks via the Somerset Emerging Player Programme before earning a place in the club’s Academy. He made his Second XI debut in 2023 and has continued to impress with both bat and gloves.

He also made his debut for Somerset’s senior side, featuring in three T20 Blast games earlier this season in May, gaining valuable experience at England's highest domestic T20 competition.

After signing his contract, speaking to Somerset  CCC, Thomas shed light on how excited he is to sign his first professional contract for the Taunton based County which will run from November 1st until the end of October 2027.

“I'm delighted to be signing this contract with Somerset. I've worked hard to achieve this goal over the last few years and I’m very grateful for all the work that Somerset has put into my game,” Thomas said.

Somerset as a club must be delighted to have nurtured and now secure one of the most promising young cricketers in the country. Rew’s journey from Academy to professional ranks has been marked by utmost dedication and incredible performance.

Rew Gave India U19 a Brutal Glimpse of the Future

Thomas’ talent was pretty much on show when the crafty right hander scored a magnificent 131 runs off just 89 balls while chasing 291 against India U19 in Northampton last week. He followed it up with another masterclass, an unbeaten 76 off 44, forcing the cricketing world to stand up and take notice.

His brother, James Rew, who also represented England U19 a few years back, is already an established force for Somerset with 10 First-Class centuries to his name. The club will be hoping that Thomas paves himself a similar successful path in the coming future.
