Rohit Sharma today shared a picture as as Instagram story, that seemed ordinary in the past but now holds special significance. In the image, Rohit, dressed in Mumbai Indians' blue jersey, is seen shaking hands with MS Dhoni, sporting Chennai Super Kings' yellow outfit, both as captains. This familiar sight, witnessed over a decade in the IPL, now carries a sense of nostalgia and realization that we may not see it again in the tournament.

When Ruturaj Gaikwad takes over CSK from MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya taking over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, it marks the first time in IPL history that the tournament starts without either Rohit or Dhoni leading a team. This momentous occasion underscores the immense legacy these two iconic captains have left behind. Together, they have led their respective franchises to a staggering 10 IPL titles out of the total 16 tournaments held so far – an incredible feat.

Since Rohit Sharma took over as captain of MI in 2013, except for the years 2016 and 2022, either Dhoni's CSK or Rohit's MI consistently made it to the finals. Their influence on the league has been undeniable, shaping the very fabric of Indian franchise cricket.

As they step aside and transition into playing roles under new captains, the direction of Indian franchise cricket enters a new phase, signaling a shift in the landscape of the IPL.

Dhoni-Rohit Rivalry

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings share an impressive record of 5 IPL titles each, along with 2 Champions League victories. These two franchises have been constant contenders in the IPL, often facing off against each other. In the finals, they've met 4 times, with CSK claiming the first victory and MI winning the subsequent three.

However, beyond the team rivalry, there's also been a notable rivalry between MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. Since Rohit took over the captaincy of Mumbai Indians, they've provided CSK with a formidable challenge unlike any other team in the IPL. Their rivalry has pushed both franchises to strive for excellence. Although Rohit has had an edge over MS in winning the finals they've faced each other in, it's been a fiercely contested rivalry.

As this season unfolds, it could potentially mark the final year of their on-field rivalry as players for CSK and Mumbai Indians. End of an era, indeed!!
