In a major development for Indian cricket, veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. Known for his grit, patience and classic Test-match temperament, the 37-year-old walked away from the sport through an emotional post on his X handle, leaving fans stunned.

Pujara Hangs His Boots From All Forms Of The Game

In his emotional post on X, Pujara tweeted, “Wearing the Indian jersey, singing the anthem, and trying my best each time I stepped on the field — it’s impossible to put into words what it truly meant. But as they say, all good things must come to an end, and with immense gratitude I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket. Thank you for all the love and support!”

Cheteshwar Pujara played a defining role in some of India’s most memorable overseas victories, including the historic 2018-19 series win in Australia, where his marathon knocks blunted the hosts’ pace attack. Over a career spanning more than a decade, he became synonymous with resilience and discipline at the crease, qualities increasingly rare in modern-day cricket.

Twitter Reacts To An ‘Emptying’ Indian Test Team

The timing of Pujara’s retirement has struck an emotional chord, especially with fans already coping with farewells from Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. With so many stalwarts calling it quits in quick succession, supporters fear India’s once-experienced Test core is fast emptying.

The BCCI has placed greater focus on nurturing the next generation, but many fans on social media described this phase as “the end of an era” for Indian Test cricket.

Though it sounded like a shock retirement, Pujara wasn't active in the Whites. He last played a Test match for India in 2023 against Australia, where he had a dismal run with 14 and 27 runs in his two innings. With Men in Blue moving on from "The Wall 2.0", his retirement was imminent.
