The highly awaited India vs Pakistan Champions match in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) has been officially cancelled. The organisers announced their decision on July 20, following strong criticism, and fans have reacted to the outcome on social media.
The WCL issued a public apology for “hurting sentiments” and causing “unintentional discomfort.” The match, which was to feature retired cricket stars from both nations, faced serious objections, especially after Indian players like Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina pulled out.
Fans React To India-Pakistan Tensions In WCL
In a statement posted on social media, the WCL said their aim was to create happy memories for cricket lovers, inspired by other India-Pakistan matches in sports like hockey and volleyball. However, they admitted that they misjudged the mood and unintentionally upset Indian legends and fans.
Meanwhile, upon official announcement, fans were left divided on the decision and shared their thoughts on social media.
"Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota. Jai Hind!" - @SDhawan25

"Shouldn’t have been happening in the first place. This isn’t a league under ICC but even the ICC tournaments now should take note of this. You can’t suddenly be normal within months after what’s happened in the past few months." - @Dravidict
"How cleverly the organizers have shifted the blame to other sports like hockey and volleyball and ffs don’t sell this nonsense of “To create some happy memories for people around the globe” when the truth is: It’s the league who was benefitting the most by making money out of it." - @Adityaksraha

"fake wokeism. if you wanna boycott, do it properly and get rid of all india vs pakistan games in the upcoming tournaments." - @notabeercompany
The biggest turning point came when Shikhar Dhawan shared a strong message on social media. He revealed that he had already informed the WCL in May about not participating in the match due to the current political situation.
Adding to the pressure, EaseMyTrip, one of the top WCL sponsors, also withdrew. With top players not wanting to play and a top sponsor pulling out, the WCL had no other option but to cancel the match.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated in the month of April-May. After terrorists killed 26 innocents lives at Pahalgam in cold blood, India attacked terror launch pads in POK, which led to a serious armed conflict lasting a week. However, after the diplomatic ceasefire, tensions eased, but the public sentiment remains hurt.
