In a major development, the Delhi and District Cricket Association landed in hot water after a debutant opening batter with absolutely no wicketkeeping experience was selected as the backup wicketkeeper in Vinoo Mankad Trophy's U19 squad.

The decision, which was allegedly made under pressure from a senior official, caused an immediate internal backlash and compelled DDCA President Rohan Jaitley to step in and correct the course of events, according to Dainik Jagran.

President intervenes to correct "flawed" selection

Rohan Jaitley took immediate action after the DDCA President learned that the selected player "doesn't keep wickets at all," despite the fact that they were still on the list with a recommendation.

Jaitley, stepped in to authorise a legitimate wicket-keeper in place of the recommended one and ordered the dismissal of the wicket-keeper with no experience from the Delhi squad. After Jaitley's intervention, the Delhi squad has now left for Ranchi, where the Vinoo Mankad Trophy will begin on October 9.

Selectors "not at fault," pressure from official alleged

As per insiders, the selectors were not responsible for the selection, as a senior DDCA official is being blamed for pressurising the selectors to choose the non-wicketkeeping batter for the team.

"When someone is included as a wicketkeeper despite not having any credentials for the role, it’s obvious there is a larger reason or influence at play," said a source familiar with the development.

Governance under scrutiny as officials defy Lokpal order

It is important to note that DDCA officials were barred from attending the selection meeting as per an interim order issued by the Lokpal on September 22, 2023. However, the officials still attended the selection meeting, which might have influenced the selection of the non-wicketkeeper.

The issue that still stings is that although Rohan Jaitley's prompt action may have corrected the influenced choice, it brings DDCA's discrepancies into the limelight, which certainly violates governance directives.
