Delhi Capitals Commits Rs 75 Crore for Arun Jaitley Stadium's Upgradation Ahead of World Cup 2023

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Delhi Capitals (DC) has partnered with the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) for the enhancement and upkeep of the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Delhi Capitals comes up with a ground-breaking initiative

According to a report by The Times of India, the stadium, which hosts DC's home games during the IPL and Women's Premier League (WPL), will receive an additional Rs 75 crores from the franchise, adding to the already assigned Rs 50 crores for its refurbishment ahead of the World Cup 2023 by the BCCI.

The announcement marks the first time an IPL franchise has volunteered for the maintenance of a cricket stadium during non-IPL months. DC co-owner Parth Jindal and DDCA President Rohan Jaitley are leading the arrangement with a primary focus on amplifying the experience for the spectators.

The collaboration is planning to introduce two high-end hospitality boxes at the venue.

"There have been discussions to set up two classy hospitality boxes in the stadium. The idea is to set up temporary boxes by the World Cup and finish the project by the next IPL. The stadium has received many complaints with regards to crowd experience during matches. DDCA and Capitals have put that as a priority,” an insider revealed as quoted by TOI.

Drawing a parallel to European football stadiums, which are often managed by corporations for their club teams, the source noted that a similar approach is in place with the advent of the home-and-away format in the Women's Premier League.

"Football stadiums in Europe are managed by corporates to maintain facilities for their club teams. This move will be somewhat in that direction. Now with the Women's Premier League set to be played in the home-and-away format, Capitals will need the stadium for more than just two months of IPL,” added the source.

The Arun Jaitley Stadium is set to host five matches of the World Cup 2023, including India's league-stage match against Afghanistan on October 11. Notably, Delhi Capitals' director of cricket, Sourav Ganguly, echoes the franchise's sentiment on the investment in stadium upgradation.

Another element under scrutiny is the deteriorating quality of the pitches because of excessive cricket.

Ensuring that this matter will be addressed, the source concluded that due to the absence of an additional ground, DDCA has to arrange camps for both men and women at the stadium in addition to hosting matches. He added that the Capitals management will collaborate with DDCA to effectively handle the stadium's workload going forward.
