Barbadian cricketer Deandra Dottin has been named in West Indies squad for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Back in mid-2022, Dottin had unexpectedly announced her retirement from international cricket following the conclusion of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England.

The West Indies cricket team, under the leadership of Hayley Matthews, recently toured Sri Lanka for a three-match T20I series. After sealing the series by a 2-1 margin, several West Indies players competed in the WCPL 2024 season in Trinidad and Tobago.

WI announce T20 WC squad, Dottin makes a surprise return

All-rounder Deandra Dottin has made a surprise return to the West Indies squad two years after announcing her international retirement to play in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the UAE. On Thursday, August 29, CWI announced a 15-player squad for the tournament, and the playing group is set to be led by in-form all-rounder Hayley Matthews.

The West Indies T20 World Cup 2024 team features four changes from the line-up that won the T20I series in Sri Lanka a couple of months ago. Apart from Deandra Dottin, the West Indies team will also witness the return of Ashmini Munisar and Mandy Mangru. Uncapped player Nerissa Crafton has also been added to the expanded 15-player group.

West Indies head coach Shane Deitz has welcomed the return of Deandra Dottin. The former Australian wicketkeeper praised her ‘phenomenal record’ and her recent form in the WCPL 2024 season.

Having made her international debut in 2008, Dottin has played 143 ODIs and 127 T20I matches so far. Apart from tallying nearly 6,500 runs across both formats, the 33-year-old all-rounder has also picked up 134 wickets.

The Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is scheduled to start on October 3 with two matches in Sharjah.
