The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) will hold its election on September 4, with a three-member election commission overseeing the process. The decision was finalised during a key meeting at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium (SBNS), attended by current and former players.

Additionally, CWAB has secured a permanent office at SBNS, a long-awaited development aimed at strengthening its operations.

Ad-Hoc Committee Outlines CWAB Election Process

Notably, CWAB's The election commission, led by Iftikhar Rahman Mithu and including former captain Habibul Bashar and ex-wicketkeeper Nasir Ahmed Nasu, will ensure the election follows CWAB regulations.

Additionally, Selim Shahed, a member of CWAB’s ad-hoc committee, confirmed the election timeline and operational updates.

"We've held a CWAB meeting and decided that the election will be held on September 4. The meeting also discussed the entire process—from membership enrollment to nomination form collection and submission. All election tasks will begin soon," said Selim in an official release.

Membership and Voting Eligibility Clarified

Selim clarified that all players registered with the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) since 1975, as well as current and former national and first-class players, will be eligible for lifetime membership with voting rights. However, BCB directors or employees will be barred from voting to prevent conflicts of interest.

"BCB directors or employees cannot vote. If any CWAB member later joins BCB, they will have to resign from one of the two roles." Selim stated. This rule addresses past controversies, such as Naimur Rahman holding both CWAB presidency and a BCB directorship simultaneously.

Focus on Player Welfare and Post-Retirement Support

Selim highlighted CWAB’s renewed focus on contractual security and timely payments for players, along with plans to establish training centres for retired cricketers.

Notably, former national batter Mohammad Mithun stressed the importance of current players engaging directly with CWAB’s leadership.

"In the past, no current player was involved with CWAB. We trusted the leadership, but eventually, we suffered due to that reliance. Now, players from all regions have come forward. We want to take responsibility ourselves. If cricket doesn’t move forward, we—the players—must own that failure too," Mithun stated.

He added that the election is open to all eligible members, with players keen to elect genuine representatives. Speculation suggests Tamim Iqbal may contest the presidency, though no official confirmation has been made.
