John Cena, arguably the greatest WWE Superstars of all time, has been making headlines once again after his emotional showdown at SummerSlam 2025. The 17-time world champion defended the Undisputed WWE Championship in a brutal Street Fight against Cody Rhodes, ultimately losing the title in a dramatic clash that reignited his farewell tour.

While Cena’s wrestling legacy remains untouchable, fans may not know about the time he swapped the wrestling ring for the cricket pitch, with a little help from an Australian legend.

Cena’s Unlikely Cricket Adventure in 2017

During a promotional tour for his movie Ferdinand in 2017, Cena found himself in Australia, where he decided to try his hand at cricket, a sport far removed from his usual world of body slams and submission holds.

Given that cricket isn’t a major sport in the U.S., Cena was essentially starting from scratch. But who better to teach him than former Australian all-rounder and Big Bash League star Shane Watson?

Watson, along with Sydney Thunder teammate Chris Green, gave Cena a crash course in batting, bowling, and fielding. The WWE icon even donned a Sydney Thunder jersey, fully immersing himself in the experience.

Watson Guides Cena In Fun Cricket Session

Cena, known for his athleticism and dedication, took to the challenge with his trademark enthusiasm. However, cricket’s technical nuances proved tricky for the wrestling legend.

"First of all I don't ever have a coordination to take a wicket (while bowling), but if I were to do something like that, I wouldn't want to become invisible so nobody there sees me. You can't see me, I did that?" Cena joked during the session.

Shane Watson, a seasoned veteran of the sport, guided him through the basics, gripping the bat, timing the ball, and even attempting a few deliveries, as Cena went through the ground rules of cricket. Cena later also tipped Chris Green and Shane Watson on how to celebrate a wicket with his trademark, "You can't see me", collecting laughter from the ground.

Now, in 2025, as Cena’s SummerSlam appearance reminds fans of his enduring star power, this lighthearted cricket detour stands as another example of his willingness to embrace new challenges. Whether in WWE, Hollywood, or even on the cricket pitch, Cena’s charisma and work ethic always shine through.
