In a significant development, Cricket Australia has addressed the controversy surrounding legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar’s exclusion from the presentation ceremony following the fifth Test between India and Australia. Earlier the veteran cricketer expressed his disappointment as he was not invited to present the coveted Trophy.
Following Australia’s comprehensive victory, it was Border who was called upon to present the trophy to Australian captain Pat Cummins. Meanwhile, Gavaskar, despite his association with the trophy, was seemingly overlooked.
Why Was Gavaskar Not Invited For BGT Presentation?
In response, Cricket Australia spokesperson issued a statement to clarify the situation.
"We acknowledge it would have been preferable if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been asked to go on stage," the spokesperson said, addressing the backlash surrounding Gavaskar’s absence from the ceremony.
It is important to note that, Cricket Australia, had informed Sunil Gavaskar that he would have been invited to present the trophy had India won the match. With Australia winning the series, Border, as the Australian representative, was given the honour of presenting the trophy.
The former India Cricketer, expressed his disappointment in an interview with Code Sports, stating- "I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India. I mean, I am here on the ground. To me it should not matter that Australia won when it comes to the presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That's fine."
Sunil Gavaskar Lashes Out At Team India
After India's embarrassing series defeat, Sunil Gavaskar also took a brutal dig out at the Indian team on live television at Star Sports post-match presentation.
On being asked after fifth Test match in Sydney if the Indian team should have prepared better in conditions like Australia.
“Who are we? We don't know cricket. We just speak just for the sake of TV and get money, don't listen to us, we're nothing. Listen from one ear, remove from another.” He added.
