In a surprising turn of events, Chris Silverwood has resigned as head coach of the Sri Lankan team due to personal reasons.

This announcement comes on the back of Sri Lanka's disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they managed only one win out of four games and failed to advance to the Super 8s, allowing South Africa and Bangladesh to progress from their group.

"Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones," Silverwood said. "After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home and spend some quality time together."

Chris Silverwood expressed his gratitude towards the team and the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) management, stating:

"I would like to thank the players, coaches, backroom staff, and management of the SLC for their support during my time in Sri Lanka. Without your support, none of the success would have been possible."

Reflecting on his tenure, Silverwood added:

"It has been a real honour for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket and I will be taking away many fond memories."

Silverwood's head coach tenure saw significant achievements, including winning the T20 Asia Cup in 2022 and reaching the finals of the 50-over Asia Cup in 2023.

Additionally, under his guidance, the team secured notable bilateral series victories, such as a home series win against Australia in the ODI format and two away Test series wins over Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka Cricket extended their best wishes to Silverwood for his future endeavours and thanked him for his valuable contributions.

As Sri Lanka Cricket faces this unexpected change, they are left to pick up the pieces and chart a new course for their future. Silverwood's departure marks the end of a chapter filled with both wins and tribulations.
