Why Rahul Dravid left RR as head coach [Source: @nikun28/X.com]
The Rajasthan Royals (RR) camp is in complete turmoil after the sudden exit of head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of IPL 2026. While his departure has been talked about for months, the timing and reasons have left fans and experts buzzing.
RR had a poor IPL 2025, finishing ninth with only four wins in 14 games. For a coach who had just lifted the World Cup with Team India, expectations were sky-high.
Many thought Dravid’s calm and methodical style would fit the Royals’ philosophy of grooming youngsters. But IPL is not always about patience; it’s about instant results. And this is where the clash reportedly began.
Rahul Dravid Reportedly Had An Internal Rift With RR
According to Cricbuzz, Rajasthan Royals did try to retain Rahul Dravid, even offering him a broader role, but he declined, choosing to walk away.
His exit, however, cannot be separated from the Sanju Samson saga. The long-time RR captain asked the management to release him after a disappointing season and injuries. While Dravid and Samson were not at loggerheads, the situation clearly became uncomfortable.
Inside the Royals camp, things got even more complicated. Reports suggest three different camps formed over the captaincy debate. One group backed Riyan Parag, who led in a few games. Another group saw Yashasvi Jaiswal as the future leader. A third camp wanted to keep Sanju Samson as captain.
This tug-of-war has left the franchise divided, and Dravid’s exit only adds fuel to the fire.
The spotlight now falls on Kumar Sangakkara, the present team director, to assume the role as head coach. But his future is also uncertain, as he has been linked with other franchises. Meanwhile, Vikram Rathour and Trevor Penney could have bigger roles if RR wants stability.
The biggest question remains: what happens to Sanju Samson? He has two years left on his contract, meaning he cannot leave unless RR trades or releases him. That leaves three possibilities: a trade to another franchise, release into the auction pool, or staying unhappily with the Royals.
