Sri Lanka have been handed a big blow ahead of the opening ODI against West Indies at the Pallekele International Stadium with their star opener, Pathum Nissanka ruled out of the game. The right-handed batter reportedly battled with a quadriceps strain during the T20I series and now has aggravated the injury ahead of the first ODI.
The 25-year-old Nishan Madushka is all set to debut in his absence. Madushka is right-handed wicketkeeper batter and has played 10 Tests for Sri Lanka so far. Nissanka's absence will be a huge loss for Sri Lanka though as the batter has been in great form and brings stability and consistency to the table. He also has a double hundred to his name in Pallekele and in his absence, other batters like Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka would have to take more responsibility.
Sri Lanka Eye Another Series Win
Sri Lanka have been in good form lately across formats. They recently beat West Indies in the T20I series and in the last ODI series, they whitewashed India. So, they are high on confidence, and would be looking to continue the momentum under the new head coach-captain duo of Sanath Jayasuriya and Charith Asalanka.
West Indies, on the other hand, are trying to bring their glory days back in ODI cricket after missing out of the World Cup in the format last year. Shai Hope is their skipper and he would be hoping that young players like Alick Athanaze, Keacy Carty step up in this series.
