In a dramatic turn of events, England captain Ben Stokes found himself at the center of a DRS storm in the ongoing second Test against India at Edgbaston. The incident saw Stokes stopping India’s review mid-way, questioning the timing of the call and triggering a moment of intense on-field drama during the third session of Day 3.

Stokes Challenges Timing of Jaiswal’s Review

The episode occurred on the fourth ball of the eighth over during India’s second innings, when Josh Tongue, coming around the wicket, delivered a sharp in-dipper that struck Yashasvi Jaiswal on his front pad. Umpire Sharfuddoula raised the finger in response to England's loud appeal, prompting Jaiswal to immediately signal for the review.

The umpire, without wasting any time, went upstairs, but before the process could unfold, Stokes stormed into the middle, claiming India had exceeded the 15-second time limit to review. What followed was a tense exchange between Stokes and the umpires, with KL Rahul stepping in from the other end to add his voice.

However, despite the England captain continuing the interruption and heated discussion, the umpire proceeded with the review. Third umpire Paul Reiffel checked the ball tracking which returned with three reds confirming the original decision of out.

Jaiswal’s Brisk Blaze Ends Amidst Chaos

In the end, the chaos did not change the outcome as Jaiswal had to depart after a brisk start, and instead India lost a crucial review early in the innings. India lost their first wicket in Jaiswal after he and KL Rahul had started the second innings positively, racing to fifty on the board in the blink of an eye.

Earlier in the day, India restricted England to 407, thanks to some wholehearted bowling from Mohammed Siraj and debutant Akash Deep, whose combined efforts kept India in the game. With a vital 180-run lead secured, India will now look to extend their advantage, aiming to set an unreachable target and level the series 1-1.
