England cricket is going through one of its most challenging phases in recent years, and head coach Brendon McCullum’s future is now under serious scrutiny following the team’s poor performance in the ongoing Ashes in Australia.

The Ben Stokes-led England side lost the Ashes 3-0 after defeats in the first three Test matches, meaning the series was decided within just 11 days. With this many fans and former cricketers have now questioned the leadership of coach Brendon McCullum.

Brendon McCullum's 'Bazball' approach under scrutiny

When Brendon McCullum took over as head coach, he made a strong impact by introducing the aggressive style of cricket known as 'Bazball'.

England enjoyed early success under this approach, winning matches with fearless batting and positive intent. However, over time, the effectiveness of this approach appears to have faded, especially in challenging overseas conditions like Australia.

England had gone to Australia hoping to win their first Ashes series Down Under since 2011. Instead, heavy losses in the opening three Tests ended those dreams early.

Although England restored some pride by winning the fourth Test at the MCG (their first Test win in Australia in 15 years), the damage had already been done.

ECB chief expected in Sydney ahead of final Test

According to reports (Daily Mail), ECB chief executive Richard Gould is expected to fly to Sydney ahead of the fifth and final Test. He is likely to hold important discussions with the team management.

He is also likely to be joined by ECB chairman Richard Thompson. McCullum’s future will be one of the main topics in these talks.

However, reports suggest that the ECB is unlikely to sack McCullum, especially with the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 approaching.

It is important to note that England's provisional squad for the marquee tournament has already been announced. Under the leadership of Harry Brook, England will face Nepal in their T20 World Cup opener at the Wankhede Stadium.

They are played in Group C along with the West Indies, Bangladesh, and Italy.

England's backroom staff under review

There has been disappointment within the ECB over how England lost the Ashes, especially as this was seen as their best chance to challenge Australia.

McCullum’s backroom staff is now also under the scanner, with reports pointing to a reduction in assistant coaches since 2022. This lack of support is believed to have limited fresh ideas and opposing views within the setup.

The report also suggests that McCullum may be allowed to serve his contract but will be given a stronger and more experienced support staff to help revive England’s Test fortunes.
