In a massive development, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended for one week amid the India-Pakistan border tensions, triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

"It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war," a BCCI official told PTI, confirming the suspension of the league, which was to wind up on May 25 in Kolkata.

IPL Suspended After Escalating Tensions Between India And Pakistan

The suspension decision came right after Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) was stopped midway during the first innings. Since the airport in Dharamsala and nearby areas was closed, the IPL arranged a special train to move the players and support staff of both teams to Delhi on Friday morning.

So far, 58 matches have been played in the IPL 2025 season, including the abandoned game in Dharamsala.

There are still 12 group-stage matches left, which were planned to be held in cities like Lucknow, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Jaipur. The playoffs were set to take place in Hyderabad and Kolkata.

What Does IPL 2025 Suspension Mean?

In simple terms, the “suspension” of IPL 2025 means that the Indian Premier League season has been put on hold for a while, either temporarily or indefinitely.

Meanwhile, officials are discussing when and how to complete the remaining matches. The last time IPL was suspended was in May 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. One possible option is to use the time set aside for India’s tour of Bangladesh and the Asia Cup to finish the final leg of IPL 2025

As of May 9, the Gujarat Titans are at the top of the IPL 2025 points table with 16 points from 11 games and a net run rate (NRR) of +0.793. RCB is in second place with the same 16 points but a slightly lower NRR of +0.482. PBKS has 15 points and a NRR of +0.376, having played one more game than both GT and RCB.
