In a significant development, the upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) may be rescheduled from its usual December-January window to May 2026. The announcement came after a crucial emergency meeting of the BPL board of directors, held on Thursday, July 10, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.
BPL Chairman, Mahbub Anam, revealed that the change in schedule is being considered due to the potential clash with the country’s general elections, which are anticipated to take place in early 2026 (According to the reports by Cricbuzz).
BPL 2026 Likely To Be Shifted To May
According to Mahbub Anam, the board is awaiting further directives from the government regarding the election preparations before finalizing the dates for the next BPL season. He emphasised that the ongoing political scenario and the need to prioritize election-related logistics were key factors in the reconsideration of the BPL's original schedule.
"BPL slot may change due to the elections," said Mahbub. "BPL [could be] before December, or another slot is being planned. We will take the next steps depending on the government's decision, and in this regard, May [window] is another option.
A day before the emergency board meeting, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus issued a directive to relevant agencies, urging them to complete necessary election-related preparations by December 2025.
The announcement made it clear that the country would be in full election mode during that time, making it unlikely that a large-scale sporting event like the BPL could take place smoothly.
A Potential May Window For BPL 2026
It is important to mention that the tournament could likely shift to May. This period could provide a more stable environment for the tournament, as political activities around the general elections would likely have concluded by then.
This would allow the BPL to take place without the logistical and security challenges that might arise during the election period.
Another important to reason to likely shift the tournament to May would be the rising expectations from fans and stakeholders, who have eagerly awaited the next season of the high-profile league. The competition, which has been a vital part of Bangladesh's cricket calendar, draws substantial domestic and international attention, contributing both to the country's sporting culture and economy.
