  • Biggest Bullcrap In The World Usman Khawaja Slams Australias Manual Coaching After 10 Wicket Win

"Biggest bullcrap in the world"- Usman Khawaja slams Australia's manual coaching after 10-wicket win

Australian opener Usman Khawaja took potshots at the 'bullcrap' manual coaching that has historically led to the demise of the Aussie batters in the subcontinent over the years.

Australia completed a sensational 10-wicket win at Galle on Day 3 with part-timer Travis Head tearing into a hapless Lankan unit with a four-wicket haul.

However, the victory was set up by the positive, unconventional approach that the Aussie batters, including Khawaja, Alex Carey and all-rounder Cameron Green employed on the second day to mock the field settings used by the Sri Lankan spinners.

While Khawaja scored a 130-ball 71, Green reaffirmed his status as one of the emerging young talents with a game-changing 77.

Meanwhile, Carey scored a rapid 47-ball 45, and the standout feature of his knock was the countless sweeps and paddles he employed against the spinners.

Australia batters over the years have been traditionally advised not to play the sweep shot against the spinners, something Khawaja believes is "bullcrap".

"The way the guys have played and how we talk about the game and playing in the subcontinent's changed a lot since I started playing for the Australian cricket team," said Khawaja as quoted by Fox Cricket.

He added: "I think we've learned from mistakes, I think guys are more trusting of their plans and able to adapt to different situations and bowling, and bat very differently from the way we do in Australia. When you see someone like Carey come in and sweep, even me as a youngster, the amount of times growing up I got told not to sweep the ball in Australia, it was every second coach telling me”.

Former Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting was a reluctant sweeper during his career, which was one of the main reasons he used to struggle on turning tracks of India.

Khawaja added that Aussie players being advised to "play down the ground" just because they are tall is "the biggest bullcrap" in the world. He also alluded to Matthew Hayden's success during the 2001 tour of India, where he just kept sweeping everything.

"Even Greeny doing it now, the amount of times I've heard people say 'you're a tall bloke, just hit down the ground', it's just the biggest bull crap in the world. If a player has the ability to sweep, whether he's six foot seven or five foot five it doesn't really matter, it's still a shot in your repertoire. It's actually more potent when a taller person does it, as we've seen Matthew Hayden do in the past," he said.

The 10-wicket win in Galle is Australia's first in the country since 2011, and the Pat Cummins-led unit will look to seal the series when they take on the hosts in the final Test, starting July 8.
