  • He Needs To Bring That Discipline Into His Game Ravi Shastri Tears Into Shubman Gill

"He needs to bring that discipline into his game"- Ravi Shastri tears into Shubman Gill

Former Indian head coach and veteran broadcaster Ravi Shastri has urged young opener Shubman Gill to 'bring discipline' in his game after the 22-year-old fell for 17 to James Anderson during the first session of the ongoing Edgbaston Test.

Gill played some pretty-looking strokes during his 24-ball 17, but as has been the case with the Punjab cricketer, he failed to convert it into a big knock.

It all happened on the second delivery of the 7th over when Gill edged the ball, resulting in a simple catch for Zak Crawley.

Shastri is currently commentating for Sky Sports and was displeased with the shot selection.

"That's unfortunate. He (Shubman Gill) is a class act. He needs to bring that discipline into his game. That's a nothing shot and he will be disappointed with it. This is a boundary-scoring ground but you need to put value on your wicket. You have to stick there and runs will come eventually,"

Shastri added that Gill would be very disappointed with the kind of shot he got caught to, a nervy tentative poke bereft of any intent.

He further reckoned that the young opener missed out on a golden opportunity of getting a big score as Edgbaston is usually a fast-scoring ground.

"Yeah, he will be mighty disappointed. When he is set, he makes runs come. Everything before this, there was intent. There was no intent here. It was just a tentative poke outside the off-stump. Really a nothing shot. He will be very disappointed with this because he had done a little bit of the hard work. This is a boundary-scoring ground, Edgbaston. Stay at the crease, you will get runs. There is value for your shots," he added.

Meanwhile, James Anderson dealt another body blow to India as he dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara for the 5th time in the first innings of this series.

At the time of writing, India were 53/2 in the 21st over, with the players forced to take an early lunch due to rain.
