Sean Abbott is targeting a return to cricket on Boxing Day after a hamstring injury sidelined him for six weeks. The setback was particularly frustrating as it caused him to miss the start of the Ashes series, having been selected in Australia's initial Test squad.

The pacer suffered a moderate hamstring strain while playing for NSW against Victoria in early November and has since been rehabilitating alongside injured teammate Josh Hazlewood.

Sean Abbott hopeful of Boxing Day return

Focused on the Big Bash League, Sean Anthony Abbott is optimistic about his recovery now as he eyes a return this week.

"(I've) just got to tick off a couple more little bits and then hopefully put my hand up for selection next week. (It's been) very frustrating but these things happen... Hopefully I can have a big Big Bash and get out there next week and play well," Abbott said.

His return would be a major boost for the Sixers, according to teammate Jack Edwards, who highlighted Abbott's all-round value.

"He brings a wealth of experience and skill … in all three aspects of the game. It'll be super exciting to see him back out there. We were all disappointed for him (when he got injured). He worked so hard for a long time and has been a consistent performer to put himself into that opportunity. I'm sure he'll get another opportunity soon," Edwards said.

For the unaware, the Sixers play the Melbourne Stars at the SCG on December 26.

Abbott, the BBL's all-time leading wicket-taker, could use a strong tournament to push for selection in next year's T20 World Cup squad.

The 33-year-old has taken 33 T20I wickets while having 175 BBL wickets. However, his last international outing was not half impressive. Bowling against India on November 2, 2025, during the tour of Australia, Sean Abbott leaked 56 runs from his 3.3 overs and also went wicketless.
