The much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy will kickstart on November 22 as Australia will lock horns against India at the Optus Stadium in Perth. It will be the 108th encounter between the two teams in Test history.

Out of the 107 Tests the two teams have squared off in, Australia have emerged as a better team with 45 victories, while India have managed just 32 wins. Further, 29 games resulted in a draw, and there has also been a tied game.

Only the 2nd Tied Game In Test Cricket History

A tie is a rare occurrence in red-ball cricket. With over 2000 Test matches played since its inception, only two games have resulted in tie in Test history. Notably, India and Australia played one back in 1986, and through this article, we will revisit the epic encounter in India.

Australia toured India for a three-match Test series in 1986. The first match was played at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Australia, batting first, rode on David Boon and skipper Allan Border's centuries. Meanwhile, Dean Jones' double hundred helped the visitors put 574/7 on the board.

In reply, the Indian batters got the start they wanted but failed to convert it into big scores until Kapil Dev smashed a century to keep the hosts alive. Eventually, India posted 397 runs.

Greg Matthews Seals The Deal For Australia

In the second innings, time was running out and Australia, in search of a result, declared the innings at a score of 170/5 to set a target of 348 for India. Meanwhile, the Kapil Dev-led side showed resilience and nearly pulled off a win as Sunil Gavaskar amassed 90 (168), while Mohinder Amarnath smashed a fifty.

India were eyeing a win and required 4 runs to win with two wickets in hand, but Ray Bright and Greg Matthews turned the course of the game and took two crucial wickets to leave India stranded on 347 that resulted in a tied game. Maninder Singh was the last wicket to fall as Matthews trapped him in front of the wickets for a four-ball duck.

Eventually, the series resulted in a 0-0 draw as no result came out of the remaining two Test matches.
