The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), on Tuesday, gave a verdict that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was primarily responsible for the stampede situation outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, a day after the franchise won the IPL title. The tribune also quashed the suspension of Vikash Kumar Vikash, who was the Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) when the incident occurred.

The incident took place on June 4 as RCB had their victory celebration inside the Chinnaswamy Stadium and the situation got out of control outside the ground as at-least 11 people lost their lives and 50 got injured. The CAT report has asked the Karnataka government to reinstate Vikash Kumar back to his original post and stated that the Police Officials were suspended without any solid evidences.

Police are neither god nor magician

The CAT report passed by Justice B.K. Srivastava and Administrative Member Santosh Mehra mentioned that the Police Officials had little time to prepare for the event as they are also human beings and are "neither god nor magician," and neither do they have "Alladin Ka Chirag."

"The question arises whether “sufficient time” was available to the police for making the sufficient arrangements? The answer is negative,” the CAT said in its order. “Because of a shortage of time on 04.06.2025, the police were unable to make the appropriate arrangements. Sufficient time was not given to the police….It cannot be expected from the police that within a short time of about 12 hours the police will make all arrangements,” the Tribunal report said, as quoted by SportsStar.

Tribunal puts blame on RCB for Bengaluru stampede

The Tribunal report declared that the IPL winners, RCB are prima facie responsible for the events which occurred on June 4. It was observed that the franchise did not take any permission to hold any activity inside the Stadium. As per the report, a permission needs to be taken seven days prior to hold any event and this was a clear violation of the law.

“The RCB did not take the appropriate permission or consent from the police. Suddenly, they posted on social media platforms and as a result of aforesaid information, the public gathered,” it said, referring to it as “creating nuisance without any prior permission,” elsewhere in the order.

Will RCB be banned from participating in the IPL?

As of yet, no decision has been passed but if the final verdict goes against the franchise, the governing body could take the harsh decision to ban the team from participating in the league, next year.

CSK and RR have already been banned once due to different reasons and if the decision is against the team, they could face the consequences.
