In a major setback for England, premier fast bowler Reece Topley has been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup 2023 after fracturing his left index finger during their recent clash against South Africa on Saturday. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed the heartbreaking news on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Topley hurt his index finger during the seventh over of South Africa’s innings. The 29-year-old walked off the field immediately after. However, after some treatment, he came back to bowl again and finished with figures of 8.5-0-88-3.

After the match in which England suffered a humiliating 229-run defeat, Topley was taken to the hospital for scans. The report revealed his left index was fractured, and thus, he will return to the UK for the next 24 hours for rehabilitation.

ECB's Official Statement On Topley

“England and Surrey seamer Reece Topley has been ruled out of the rest of the ICC Men’s World Cup after fracturing his left index finger during England’s defeat to South Africa on Saturday. Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury. Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours.”

Having taken eight wickets in just three matches, Topley was in excellent form in the World Cup 2023 in India. As a result, his unavailability for the rest of the campaign, already traumatic for the defending champions, has worsened.

With one win and three defeats, England are placed ninth on the points table, only above Afghanistan. They will next play Sri Lanka on October 26 in Match 25 of the competition.
