In a massive setback for New Zealand, swashbuckling all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of the ongoing tour of Zimbabwe. The veteran cricketer hasn't recovered from an injury he sustained during the recently concluded Major League Cricket (MLC) season.
Phillips Out With Injury; Robinson To Stay With New Zealand Team
Glenn Phillips sustained a groin injury during his stint with Washington Freedom in the MLC 2025. Despite the setback, the all-rounder travelled with the squad to Zimbabwe, where scans revealed that he would require several weeks to recover from the injury.
As a result, the spin-bowling all-rounder has been withdrawn from New Zealand's Zimbabwe tour, where the BlackCaps are set to feature in two Tests apart from the ongoing T20I Tri-Series.
“It’s obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn’s calibre. Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. We know he was eager to get out on the field for the BLACKCAPS and unfortunately, he won’t be able to do that for this series. We know he’ll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens," New Zealand head coach Rob Walter was quoted as saying by NZC.
It's worth mentioning that NZC will name a replacement player for Phillips in due course. The experienced cricketer will return to the Oceanian country along with Jame Neesham and Mitchell Hay, who were also added to the squad as covers. On the contrary, Tim Robinson, who struck a valuable fifty in New Zealand's Tri-Series opener against South Africa, has been asked to stay with the team.
New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl in their second game against Zimbabwe. The visitors have made four changes to their playing XI, replacing Robinson, Hay, Sodhi, Neesham with Ravindra, Chapman, Bracewell and Milne, respectively.
