The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended its offer to Rahul Dravid to stay as India's head coach. The BCCI reportedly approached Dravid last week, and ESPNcricinfo has learned that the extension's duration is 'open-ended'.

Nevertheless, it remains unclear if Dravid has accepted the offer. The appointment of a new head coach could have upset the system Dravid had built up over the preceding two years, which was one of the key reasons the BCCI was keen to keep him on.

Dravid succeeded Ravi Shastri following the T20 World Cup in 2021. His two-year appointment came to an end with the Men in Blue finishing as the runners-up in the 2023 World Cup. That was India's joint-best performance at ICC events under him, having earlier lost the World Test Championship final in June.

However, should Dravid accept the offer, his first assignment during his second stint will be India’s tour of South Africa. Then, there will be two Test matches: one on December 26 in Centurion, and the other on January 3 in Cape Town.

The ESPNCricinfo report also suggested that Dravid, if he accepts the offer, is expected to stick with the same group of assistant coaches that he teamed up with in 2021: T. Dilip as the fielding coach, Vikram Rathour as the batting coach, and Paras Mhambrey as the bowling coach.
