The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly agreed to compensate the cricket venues that were left out of hosting the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 matches. This decision comes amidst the uproar over several iconic venues like Mohali and Nagpur being overlooked, which sparked allegations of politicization from various corners.

BCCI's Balancing Act: World Cup venues to relinquish bilateral ODIs

The World Cup, scheduled to take place exclusively in India for the first time, will witness matches across ten venues - Delhi, Dharamsala, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Lucknow.

The warm-up games are slated to be held in Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram, along with Hyderabad. While each of the other venues will be hosting five matches of the tournament, Hyderabad has been allocated three World Cup matches along with two warm-up games.

The marquee tournament will commence on October 5 with an opening match between England, the defending champions, and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The same venue is also set to host the ICC World Cup 2023 FInal on November 1

According to sources, BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah has proposed a solution to ensure equitable distribution of matches. As per the proposed plan, the venues hosting the World Cup games will voluntarily surrender their rights to host One Day International (ODI) matches during India's home season.

This move is intended to make up for the state associations that missed out on hosting World Cup matches. Shah's proposal has reportedly been unanimously accepted by the officials of the ten World Cup venues.

"During our meeting, I had proposed a solution to ensure a fair distribution of matches for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023... This proposal was put forth in order to accommodate the state associations that unfortunately missed out on hosting matches of the Cricket World Cup," said Shah in a letter circulated to the state units as reported by PTI.

"I am pleased to inform you that the proposal received unanimous agreement and support from all the participating associations,” added Shah.

However, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram, the hosts for the World Cup warm-up games, will retain the rights to host matches during India's home season, unlike the other World Cup venues.
