Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya's season began poorly and ended disastrously as his team lost their final league game of IPL 2024 to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday, May 17.

Adding to Pandya's woes, he was fined Rs 30 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate in the first innings of the match. He has also been suspended from his team's opening match of the next IPL season.

Pandya banned for IPL 2025 opener

Since this was the third time Mumbai Indians were found guilty of the same offence, Pandya received a one-match ban, similar to the one handed to Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant earlier this season. With MI's IPL 2024 campaign concluding on Friday, Pandya's suspension will take effect during the team's first game next season.

"Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their IPL 2024 match against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 17. As it was his team’s third offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Pandya was fined Rs 30 lakh and banned from playing the team’s next match,"  the media release said.

Pandya isn't the only one facing penalties. All other team members, including star opener Rohit Sharma, have been fined 50 percent of their respective match fees or Rs 12 lakh, whichever is lower.

Although there is no fixed rule, typically the team management pays the fines on behalf of its players, so the players rarely suffer any financial loss.
